History of Dragon Ball
Akira Toriyama’s Inspiration
Dragon Ball was based on the manga by Akira Toriyama, which first debuted in Weekly Shōnen Jump back in 1984. This series is inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, which follows the Monkey King Sun Wukong Toriyama based the series’ main protagonist, Son Goku, on the legendary figure Sun Wukong. The story originally had a stronger emphasis on Goku’s journey across the planet looking for the seven mystical Dragon Balls — objects that summon a dragon who can grant wishes.
Journey to the West was more like a loose framework for Toriyama’s story, which he uniquely intermingled with martial arts, comedy, and science fiction elements. The end result was a colourful, action-fuelled show that quickly found success in Japan.
