Tulsi Gabbard (born April 12, 1981; /ˈtʌlsi ˈɡæbərd/ TUL-see GAB-ərd) is an American politician and political commentator who is a United States Army Reserve officer. She was the U.S. Vice Chair for the 50th and 4th congressional district of Hawaii (2013-2021) and the first Samoan-American member of congress Her political career launched in 2002, as the youngest woman to ever be elected to the Hawaii state legislature, at age 21. Gabbard was deployed in Iraq from 2004 to 2005 in a medical unit after enlisting in the Hawaii Army National Guard earlier that year. Gabbard is a distinguished honor graduate of the Officer training program at the Alabama Military Academy (2007) [8]. While serving in Congress, Gabbard was an outspoken critic of Middle east Islamic terrorism. Around 2015, she was a regular critic of the Obama administration for what her team calls “their refusal to name Islamic extremism.” 13 She was Vice-chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) from 2013 to 2016 until resigning from this post and endorsing Bernie Sanders for the nomination in the 2016 Democratic presidential primary.15 Gabbard was one of the few members of Congress who voiced skepticism in 2017 about some of America’s military action against Syria. 17 During her presidential campaign in 2020 she expanded opposition to military interventionism,13 while continuing to voice a hardline stance on fighting terrorism. Gabbard is of European and Samoan descent39 and grew up in a multicultural family. [41] Her mom was a native of Indiana, who grew up in Michigan. [42] Her father is of Samoan and European descent and was born in American Samoa, then moved to Hawaii as a child, and later lived in Florida; [43] [41] Gabbard’s mother became a settler of Hawaii,[36] and adopted Hinduism,44 assigning the name for all her children included Hindus. Note that Gabbard’s name, “Tulsi,” means holy basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum) in Sanskrit and is considered an earthly incarnation of the goddess Tulasi. [46]
