Virginia Tech Hokies Football in 2024

The 2024 Virginia Tech Hokies football campaign has been a roller coaster ride featuring highs and lows. Having a young, talented team, the Hokies started the season with the hope of reasserting themselves as one of the ACC’s top clubs.Virginia Tech Hokies Football

A Promising Start Virginia Tech Hokies Football

The season started 3-1 and featured a very exciting win over the North Carolina Tar Heels. Quarterback Kyron Drones emerged as a dynamic playmaker, showcasing his arm strength and mobility. The offensive line provided solid protection, allowing the running game, led by Bhayshul Tuten, to gain consistent yardage.

However, the defense struggled at times, particularly against the pass. The secondary, plagued by injuries and inconsistency, allowed opposing quarterbacks to exploit weaknesses in coverage. Although, the Hokies’ own defense was weak, the team’s offense was still able to win several games.

A Mid-Season Slump Virginia Tech Hokies Football

A mid-season slump derailed the Hokies’ momentum. Losses to ACC foes, Clemson and Miami, revealed weaknesses in the team. The offensive line faltered, leading to increased pressure on Drones and limiting the effectiveness of the running game. The defense continued to struggle, failing to generate turnovers and allowing big plays.

The Hokies’ struggles were exacerbated by injuries to key players, including Drones and Tuten. Backup quarterbacks Collin Schlee and William Watson III were forced into action, and while they showed flashes of potential, they lacked the experience and consistency of Drones.

A Fight for Bowl Eligibility

At the end of the season, the Hokies are battling for bowl eligibility. On a tough schedule with games against Virginia and Duke, the group is up for a daunting task.

In order to achieve a bowl berth, the Hokies need to get better defensively, especially in the secondary. The defensive line has been a success, applying pressure on the enemy quarterback, but the linebackers and secondary must improve their performance.

Offensively, the Hokies are looking for some way to protect the Drones and build a consistent running offense. The receiving corps, again orchestrated by Ali Jennings, has to come up heavy with big plays.

In the end, Hoki’s performance this year will be dictated not only by the skills of the team, but by the ability to bounce back from setbacks and play with a raw, gritty heart. Backed by a good player list and a dedicated fan base, the Hokies have the opportunity to close the season well and earn a bowl game.

Key Questions for the Future

Will Kyron Drones keep improving to an elite level quarterback?

Is the defense going to be able to get better at the pass, and get more forced turnovers?

Does the offensive line protect the quarterback effectively?

Can the Hokies capitalize on recruiting momentum and create a sustainable program?

As the 2024 season unfolds, Virginia Tech fans will be closely watching to see if their team can rise to the occasion and return to the glory days.
